The Saint Martin de Porres deaf community met on 1 November to discuss the way forward for the community of the deaf in Soweto. This was prompted by the deaf awareness celebration which took place on 16 September at which there was an impressive response.
In the meeting, issues around forming a Soweto association for the Catholic deaf community, but not excluding interested non- Catholics, was discussed.
The objective of the association will be to co-ordinate the services for the deaf community, learning how to DEAFSA can assist, as well as other issues relating to the deaf community. Another meeting is planned for February.
The convenor of the meeting, .Lucas Magongwa (right), thanked St Martin de Porres Orlando West for the support and generosity allowing them to use the church. He also said he appreciated the church’s openness towards the deaf community.
An invitation is extended to all deaf community members to celebrate monthly mass at St Martin de Porres, Orlando West every second Sunday where they have a sign-intepreted Mass by Father Mark at 11am, purely for the deaf, and at 8.30am as a joint Mass with the hearing community.
