The Chancery Steering Committee, under the chairmanship of Charles Rowlinson met for the last time on Tuesday 30 October prior to a thank-you party for its members, the professional team and the organisers of the Chancery official opening celebrations.
The meeting heard that the R30m fundraising target had been met; Maryvale had opted for a cash payout on the car and that there were only minor matters still outstanding on the new buildings before the contractors could hand them over to the Archdiocese.
At the function a video of the project from start to finish was shown. Copies are available from the Chancery. Archbishop Buti warmly thanked those present and all those who had made the dream a reality. He said that the project had drawn the Archdiocese together – parishioners drawn together in their parishes and with other parishioners all over the Archdiocese and lay people and clergy drawn together.
He paid tribute to Fr John Finlayson as the visionary behind the project – announcing informally that from now on Fr John could use the title Monsignor.
The Archbishop also said that raising the funds locally had shown that we are a ‘can do diocese’. It is good that people can see where their money goes and is a step toward a self-sustaining local Church.
Archbishop Buti presented each with a memento and a copy of the video by Press Play Films SA as a token of appreciation.
Never one to allow people to rest on their laurels for long, Archbishop Buti hinted that he had another project up his sleeve.
