A message from the Archdiocesan Family Life Department
Pope Benedict, in inviting the church to celebrate a Year of Faith, gave as his main purposes: Firstly, to learn more about our faith and secondly to grow in our relationship with Jesus.
He writes “Through his love, Jesus Christ attracts to himself the people of every generation. Today too, there is a need for stronger commitment to new evangelization in order to rediscover the joy of believing and the enthusiasm for communicating the faith. Faith grows when it is lived as an experience of love received and when it is communicated as an experience of grace and joy.” This experience of love clearly begins in each family, ideally between a husband and wife and their children but also in the other types of family forms, for example single parents, or grandparents bringing up children. Parents and other family carers are the primary educators who are called to pass on their faith to new members and through family catechesis, which is a study of the faith as a family. All the members of a family can grow in faith and understanding.
The tasks of family ministry are to build up relationships with God and with one another. This can be done from parish level, but must also take place in each family home through family moments, times together to share, to pray and play, to eat and meet.
The 2013 Family Year Planner, with its overall and monthly themes, can be seen as a family’s own liturgical calendar on which families add their own important days, commemorative days to the general liturgical dates. To accompany it MARFAM’s Family Matters magazine contains articles with valuable information about the Year of Faith and the monthly themes and the booklet Family Moments and Faith Moments, is a collection of short thoughts for the day for the three months from January to March that include the season of Lent and Easter. Each month, ADNews will initiate the faith sharing possibilities by publishing the overview for the month. This does not interfere with, but complements what is done by Renew Africa.
